LOTUS FLOWERS Nelumbo nucifera |
|
Lotus
Flower, Indian Lotus, Sacred Lotus, Bean of India Nelumbo
nucifera
These are stunning water plants that were completely new to me as I began
to visit gardens in the Pacific countries. I have no doubt they would comfortably
adjust to climates where hard freezing is not present. As you can see from
all the photographs here, these flowers I absolutely cannot resist.
Benefits:
From: Tropical Asia
Photographed: In the Botanic Garden in Wellington,
New Zealand, in the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, and in the
Jardin Botanique in Tahiti in 2013.

Water
Hyacinth Eichhornia
crassipes
From: S. America
Photographed: In the Botanical Garden at the
Hotel Atitlan on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.
Planting and Care: This water based plant
will do fine in full sun or semi shade. Do not plant the
water hyacinth in an open water situation as it is invasive
and will be hard to control once it gets started. We saw
it once having overtaken in a small pond in southern Louisiana.
Its appearance wasn't all that bad, but the smell was something
I still remember and not particularly fondly.

Water Lily Victoria amazonica, Victoria regia
Being lucky enough to catch one of these beauties flowering is not easy, but
I'm going to keep trying. Benefits:
From: Tropical Americas
Planting and Care: These lilies will do best in full sun in
a pool of water at least a few feet deep. They will manage a semi shady spot,
but will not be at their best.

These
are the water gardens at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens
and Arboretum in Bristol, Rhode Island. The one below on the left is contained
and appears Asian in character while the one on the right seems
like one might see on a farm, a natural pool that has been
circumscribed by stones found on the property. Below these is
the much larger
pool, which over time evolved to have an
Asian feel as well. It is large and informal compared to the
first water garden. Folks who have swimming pools that are
regularly vacuumed might take advantage of the water loss and
incorporate a water garden in their landscaping plans.

The Ortobotanico
de Palermo or Palermo's Botanical Garden is a
marvel of man's devotion to the the green world. It is spectacular.

and who knows what else. It is lovely. Below that is another water
garden, smaller but just as appealing. |

WATER
PLANTS |
Cattails,
Bulrush, Common Cattail Typha latifolia
These fascinating perennial plants can be found all over the world.
Benefits:
Many parts of this plant
are edible, but because it is known for its ability to absorb pollutants and
other toxins, it is probably best now
to avoid it as a food source.
When dried and burned,
the
furry
cattails give off a very pleasant scent that serves as a mosquito repellent.
From: Native just about everywhere.
Photographed: Along the roadside in Maine,
2013.
Planting and Care: Adaptable to altitude and many other environmental
factors, the cattail is almost always found beside or growing in relatively shallow
water.

Large
Flowered Waterweed, Brazilian Waterweed Egeria
densa Planch.
This beautiful flowering plant is indeed a water plant. It grows well in water
up to 12 feet deep and extends its branches up to 4 feet.
Benefits and Drawbacks: The appeal of this plant has made it
a favorite of aquarium owners who sadly have let it get out of hand. It is now
considered an
unwanted invasive plant in many countries.
From: Warm areas of South America
Photographed: In the Botanical Garden in Naples, Italy, in 2014.
Planting and Care: On this one, I'm not going to help.
