Lily Eucharis sp.
I like these little beauties so much I now have
them growing in my own garden at the lake.
From: Central and South America
Photographed: At the Hotel Atitlan on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.
Planting and care: These lovely lilies bloom in the summer
at a two foot height. They are extremely sensitive to cold, being damaged
or stressed by any temperature below 68°F or 20°C and they
prefer semi shady conditions.

CRINUM
LILIES
This
is a group or family of lilies that I first encountered and fell
in love with at our former home in Taxco, Mexico. Since then
I have seen varieties growing wild beside the road at our former
home in the Caribbean Island of Montserrat and now I've found
those familiar lilies and a new member of the family here at
Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala.

Saint
Christopher Lily
This
crinum has lush green leaves and 18" to two foot stems producing
tulip like almost iridescent white blooms. As you are walking
through a garden, these are an eye stopper!
Photographed: Just behind some small rental
houses being renovated in the San Buenaventura Hacienda area
by Lake Atitlan in Guatemala in May 2010.
Planting and Care: The Christopher prefers
the sun, but will be gracious about a little shade. Give
them the best spot in a sunny garden and they'll bloom for
you twice, in spring and in fall.

**Cecil
Houdyshel Lily
Called
the Sangre de Cristo in Taxco, Mexico, on weekends these lilies
are brought to market in bunches of twelve from family gardens in the
surrounding villages. When I could find a bunch that hadn't been abused
on the bus ride into town I'd buy whatever they had at whatever price
they quoted. It was always a bargain for me and I think many times
a boon for them.
Planting and Care: The plant seems like it would
be happiest in a swampy area although it does grow under very difficult
situations, often by the sunny hot and dry roadside in Montserrat.

Crinum Lily #1
This seemed the most beautiful of the crinums, though that was truly only because
I just had a huge vase of them on our dining room table. That is not to say they
aren't spectacular, only that this whole group of flowers is!
Photographed: Just behind some small rental houses being renovated
in the San Buenaventura Hacienda area by Lake Atitlan in Guatemala in May 2010.

Crinum Lily #2
These flowers reminded me of autumn crocus as they bloom with such exuberance
awaiting their greenery at some time in the future. Such belief in the future,
such hope!

Oriental
Lily Lillium (probably 'Stargazer')
These are some of the most spectacular lilies for their beauty, their
size and their scent. This is one plant that has it all.
Benefits:
From:
Photographed: At the Hotel Atitlan on Lake Atitlan in
Guatemala.
Planting and Care: Use a rich slightly grainy soil that
will provide the excellent drainage these lilies require. Plant them
in a very bright semi shady area or in one that receives only morning
light and try to give them protection from heavy winds. Make sure that
the lilies receive regular rainfall or watering and get ready for the
show. When the show is over and the plants appear to have given up the
ghost, cut them back to the ground and prepare for the next season.

Sword
Lily, Abyssinian Sword Lily Gladiolus callianthus and
Acidendrytha
Benefits:
From: Maybe from Ethiopia
Photographed: At the Hotel Atitlan on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala
in 2010.
Planting and Care: This is a lily that is easy to grow
especially in warm climates. In cold environments it will need to be removed
from the garden and stored in paper until late spring when it can go back in
the garden. It grows well in ordinary soil in full sun or with some shade
in the afternoon. Though it is a lily, its foliage appears to be most like
that of an iris. Its
sweet smelling sleepy blossoms and attractive foliage make it well
worth the effort to dig it up and replant in the spring. It multiplies easily
making it an even more wonderful plant.

My
'White Lily Mystery #7' was solved by a visitor to my
website who lives in S. Devon in the UK. I am very grateful
for her help. It sounds like she
has a lovely garden and I sure hope she can identify more of
my mysteries.
