**Begonia
Landscaping
Begonias range from the prosaic shady garden hardy plant in carefree New England
summer gardens, usually with nondescript pink or red flowers, to large leaved
indoor specimens with beautiful flowers. These latter plants would have been
perfect in our Montserrat shade garden, but except for an angel wing begonia
slip given to us no other plants were available. Now that we live in Guatemala
the world is our oyster with almost anything we can think of available in a week
or two. It's wonderful!
Photographed: At the driveway entrance to Hotel Atitlan on Lake
Atitlan in Guatemala.
Planting and Care: In general begonias prefer not to be
planted in a full sun area of the garden. They do best in very bright semi
shady areas. They like it warm, not hot and they never like it cold. Despite
all of these preferences, begonias are old staples in the garden and in the
house plant department and they will do just fine in most situations.

Children's
Gardens
This
is another of my favorite plants for children. They will love
the colors, the ease of planting and the almost certain success
they have with their first venture in the garden. |

Begonia
Angularis Begonia angularis
In a whole acre or so of begonias this one stood out for its shade loving, ground
hugging very tropical feel.
Benefits:
From: S. America
Photographed: In the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia,
in 2013.
Planting and Care: This four foot begonia is an infrequently
blooming perennial that will be happy with only morning sun and relatively
cool northern climate summer temperatures, though it is not frost hardy.

Begonia
diadema 'Pink Delight' Begonia diadema
This showy perennial is perfect for patios and terraces. When mature it will
be about 2 feet in height.
Benefits: Begonia diadema is a bee attractant.
From: Borneo

Planting and Care: Plant in rich well-drained moist soil and
keep it out of direct sunlight.

Begonia
venosa Begonia venosa
I found the grayed almost furry looking leaves of this plant especially appealing.
Benefits:
From: Desert areas of Brazil
Photographed: In the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia,
in
2013.
Planting and Care: This very peculiar member of the begonia
family likes it very sunny, hot and dry as in desert conditions.

Begonia
Honeymoon (Million Kisses) Begonia boliviensis x hybrid
When mature this begonia will be about 1 foot high and 3 feet in diameter. It
is perfect as a hanging plant.

From: Begonias are native to Mexico, Central and South America, Asia
and
South
Africa.
Photographed: At
the Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum, in Bristol, Rhode Island,
USA in 2017.
Planting and Care: Place this lovely begonia in a
brightly lit place shaded from direct sun and out of strong winds.
Plant it in rich well-drained moist soil and enjoy the show.

**Hardy
White and Pink Begonias Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana,
B. evansiana
This is a wonderful perennial little care ever flowering
begonia that deserves a place in every garden. See the white
version below. It is lovely also, but seems just a little less
exuberant.
Planting and Care: This
is a perennial and easy care begonia that will reward your
efforts on its behalf with almost continuously blooming
pink flowers as you see in the photographs. While it is
said to prefer light shade or only morning sun, I've seen
it growing and in bloom in full sun and deep shade as well.
Give it routine rainfall or watering and a rich loamy soil
to keep it at its best.

We came upon this beauty in one of the very stylish new greenhouses at the Royal

begonia.
Benefits:
From: Humid tropical mountain areas of Southeast Asia.
Photographed: In
the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, in 2013.
Planting and Care: This is a sporadically blooming begonia
that lives best in bright light or full shade in a frost free, moist environment,
with rich acidic organic soil.

Pond
Lily Begonia, Lotus Leaf Begonia, Water Lily Begonia Begonia
nelumbifolia
Like most members of this family, the pond lily begonia is a warm climate perennial.
They will grow to be just under 2 feet tall.
Benefits:
From: Central America
Photographed: In
the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, in 2013.
Planting and Care: Bright shade is best, though they
will probably do as well in dappled sunlight. The soil should be well
drained, but moist.

Striped
Begonia Begonia listada
Though its name was not inspired, the plant nonetheless is quite appealing as
are its button flowers.
Benefits:
From: Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil
Photographed: In
the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, Australia, in
2013.
Planting and Care: This perennial will grow to be about
1 1/2 feet tall in a warm climate when planted in a neutral to acid rich

I don't consider this a particularly attractive begonia,
but I finally saw it in bloom and thought it had that as a very redeeming
feature.

Normally
I like only white and green leaf color combinations, but this begonia
and a few other plants I like look very much like an artist has been
at work. That I like very much.
