**Ground
Orchid Spathoglottis
plicata
Ever the optimist, when living in Montserrat I spotted small ground hugging
volunteers that looked very much like tiny orchids. I carefully moved each
one to a special place for special care and waited and waited. In the end,
they weren't orchids at all, but maybe a very smart plant that knew it
would be treated especially well if it just looked like an orchid.
Planting and Care: We have read that
to get the best these plants have to offer, they should
be planted it in the sun where their purple flowers
will be a delight. Equally
as often, we have heard that the ground orchid is happiest
when it lives in partial shade in a sweet (limey) soil
where it will produce magenta or white flowers in early
summer (in the Caribbean).

**Lady
of the Night Brassavola nodosa (Linneaeus)
Lindley
This is a white flowering orchid that is not so showy as to be coveted, but wonderful
in its hardiness and in its habit of blooming frequently.

Tongue
Orchid Buibophyllum fletcherianum
This orchid is growing in the new tropical greenhouses at the Royal Botanical
Garden in Sydney. And when they say tropical they do mean it. We came
out wet after an hour or two wandering and it was worth every minute
to see spectacular plants like this. Personally I think it might have
been given a less anatomical name. I looked it up on Google images and
recommend you do the same. The flowers are glorious.

**Vanilla
Orchid Vanilla planifolia or Vanilla
fragrans
I had always wanted one of these plants to see if I could produce vanilla and
I finally got two. I planted them carefully in out of the way places so they
wouldn't be stolen and cared for them until they settled in and were off running.
A few months later we were traveling and when we returned one of the plants
had been harvested for another garden, but the one left was doing just fine
having been well hidden and on its own for a few months.
From: Tropical Central America and Mexico.
Planting and Care: This orchid originated in a moist tropical environment;
it likes a semi shady place to grow and abundant moisture. When also given
a humus rich soil, vanilla will be off and running, growing as much as 100
feet in just a few years. I hope you can see in the middle photograph below
that the vine was planted in a pile of decaying coconut husks.

**Orchid Brazilovia
This is the orchid that lived in the small tree by our lower vegetable garden
at our former home in Montserrat. It was a gift in 2003 and did not survive
the terrible volcanic ashfall of that year.

**Orchid Dendrobium
In Montserrat, this was our ever flowering orchid that found its home in
the crook of our largest mahogany tree. You can’t beat this plant
for its stamina or for its hardiness. It survived the volcanic ash
fall of July 2003 with flying colors. It was blooming the day we arrived
and was still blooming six months later. If you would like to
enjoy them in the house, cut stems last a week or more if you cut them
early in the morning. These orchids were so beautiful they turned out
to be coveted by our neighbors. The last time we returned to the island,
there were only a very few left in the mahogany tree. We did see a
large bunch on the second floor balcony of our Montserratian neighbor
across the street, Will Ryan, and later a huge bunch potted on another
neighbor's
patio
just down the street, expat American Nancy Reynolds.
From:
Photographed: In
the crook of our largest mahogany tree at our former home in Montserrat.
Planting and Care: These orchids thrived sitting
in the nook of our mahogany. If you want to plant some that will
be equally successful, look for a nice spot on a tree where the plant
will sit as if it's seed drifted there and found moisture and leaf
debris. Secure the plant with light cotton string until it makes
its own root attachments.

**Orchid Schomburgkia
We have two varieties. One has a dark purple flowers and thrives in the
big tree closest to the house and the other with an orange-brown
flower lives at the base of the big mahogany tree. Though wonderful
in bloom, the flowers do not last very long.

Orchid
Mystery 9 and 9a
This is a plant I bought years ago at the market in Taxco just before Christmas,
when many villagers from small outlying towns bring plants and mosses to
be used in making creches. I don't know where it came from or what it is
called, but it thrived in a pot on our terrace and flowered regularly.
